Best Online CPE Courses for CPAs 2026–2027

Provider Comparison

How CPE providers actually differ

Most provider comparisons rank on price and stop there. Price isn't a useful sorting criterion here, because the products underneath are structured differently enough that the number rarely describes the same thing twice.

Five dimensions separate providers in practice.

  • Purchase model: Unlimited subscription, credit package, or course by course. These are different products, not different prices for the same product.
  • Format mix: Live webinar volume varies by an order of magnitude across providers. Self-study-only catalogs cost less and cover less.
  • What the subscription excludes: Nearly every provider carves something out. Premium updates, certificate programs, and ethics are the usual exclusions.
  • State-specific ethics: Several boards accept ethics credit only from providers they have approved directly, which no amount of catalog size resolves.
  • Credit tracking: Whether the provider tracks credits earned elsewhere, or only its own.

A CPA completing 40 hours a year and a CPA needing 6 hours are shopping for different things. The 40-hour buyer is choosing a catalog. The 6-hour buyer is choosing a transaction.

Provider comparison

Published figures as of August 2026. Providers publish different units, so the volume column reflects what each company states rather than a normalized figure.

Where each provider fits

Surgent CPE

Three subscription tiers, split by format rather than by content depth. Unlimited PLUS at $899 carries the full catalog in every format: 10,000+ credits, 8,500+ from live webinars, 1,300+ on-demand, 1,000+ self-study, plus premium and gamified content. Unlimited Webinars at $749 and Unlimited Self-Study at $549 narrow the format rather than thinning the catalog.

The live programming figure is the widest verified gap in the category. 2,300+ live webinars a year, scheduled across time zones including evenings and weekends, against roughly 1,000 for the nearest comparable provider. For update-driven practices where the value sits in current content rather than archived courses, that difference compounds.

Premium and specialized courses, late-breaking updates, and state-specific ethics sit inside the subscription rather than behind a higher tier. Certificate programs, the Annual Tax Refresher, and select interactive titles are excluded.

Accreditations extend past NASBA to IRS, CFP, and CTEC.

Becker

Four tiers, priced from $329 to $1,429, tiered by how much catalog is included and for how long. Prime at $799 is where the catalog arrives intact. Select at $499 drops premium content, podcast CPE, and evening and weekend webcasts. Essentials at $329 runs 90 days rather than a year and drops industry-specific courses.

The compliance tracker is the standout feature and has no direct equivalent among the others. It incorporates credits earned from any provider, not only Becker, which matters for anyone deliberately buying CPE from multiple sources.

A two-year Prime term at $1,429 is the only multi-year option in the category, useful against biennial reporting cycles. Podcast-based CPE credit is also unique to Becker among these providers.

myCPE ONE

A single unlimited tier at $199, the lowest full subscription price in the category by a wide margin, with 15,000+ published hours spanning 100+ qualifications.

The multi-credential coverage is the real differentiator rather than the price. A professional holding CPA plus CMA, CIA, or CFE can draw credit for several designations from one subscription, which single-credential catalogs cannot do.

Breadth across that many designations means the catalog is spread wider rather than deeper in any one area. For a CPA in a specialized practice, depth in the relevant field matters more than total hours.

Unlimited subscriptions in the $680 to $1,130 range depending on format access. Sits in the same pricing band as Surgent and Becker without publishing a comparable catalog total, which makes direct volume comparison difficult.

Western CPE

No unlimited subscription. Western sells credit packages, where a CPA buys a block of credits and redeems them against any course in the digital library over the year.

That's a genuinely different product, and the comparison isn't apples to apples. Credit packages suit a licensee who knows they need exactly 24 or 40 hours and wants to pay for that rather than for access. They do not suit anyone whose consumption is unpredictable, since running out means buying again.

The catalog runs 450+ on-demand courses including 60+ ethics options, several meeting state-specific requirements. Live destination conferences are a format the online-only providers do not offer.

CPAacademy.org

Individual courses, a large share free, funded by sponsors who present alongside the educational content. Paid sessions run around $35.

For a CPA needing a handful of credits, free is hard to argue with (and the credit is NASBA-registered). For a full 40-hour requirement, assembling it session by session from a sponsor-supported calendar is a scheduling exercise, and course availability follows sponsor interest rather than curriculum planning.

Matching a provider to a practice

Situation Practical fit
Full 40-hour annual requirement, live preferred Surgent CPE. Live volume is more than double the nearest provider, with evening and weekend scheduling
Update-driven tax or specialized practice Surgent CPE. Premium and late-breaking update content included rather than tiered
Credits bought from several providers Becker. The compliance tracker consolidates credit earned anywhere
Multiple credentials held (CPA plus CMA, CIA, CFE) myCPE ONE. Single subscription covers multiple designations
Fewer than 10 credits needed CPAacademy.org for free sessions, or Western CPE credit packages
Known fixed credit volume, predictable Western CPE credit packages. Pay for credits rather than access
Multi-year reporting cycle, prepaid Becker. The only two-year term in the category
Strict budget myCPE ONE at $199 is the lowest full unlimited subscription

The limits of catalog size as a metric

Published volume figures are the least comparable numbers in this category, and they are the ones every roundup leads with.

Providers publish in different units. Surgent and myCPE publish credit hours. Becker and Western publish course counts. A credit is 50 minutes; a course can be 1 credit or 8. Dividing one figure by the other produces nothing meaningful.

Volume doesn't say anything about whether a particular course counts, either. Three constraints operate independently of catalog size.

  • State board approval: Several boards require providers to register directly, separate from NASBA registration. Texas is one. Some boards accept ethics credit only from board-approved providers.
  • Field of study caps: Many boards cap non-technical credits as a share of the total, so a large catalog weighted toward soft skills may not close a technical requirement.
  • Format caps: Self-study and nano learning are capped in several states regardless of provider.

All six providers listed here appear on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. Registry status confirms programs meet the joint AICPA and NASBA Standards. It does not confirm a given course satisfies a given license, which is a state board question.

State-by-state totals, ethics rules, and reporting periods are covered in the Surgent CPE state requirements library.

Frequently asked questions

  • It depends on annual credit volume and format preference. Surgent CPE carries the most live programming at 2,300+ webinars per year. Becker offers the only multi-provider compliance tracker and the only two-year term. myCPE ONE is the lowest-priced full subscription at $199. Western CPE sells credit packages rather than unlimited access.
  • Full unlimited subscriptions run from $199 to $899 per year as of August 2026. myCPE ONE is $199, Becker Prime is $799, and Surgent Unlimited PLUS is $899. CCH CPELink ranges from $680 to $1,130. Lower-priced tiers from some providers carry reduced catalogs or shorter terms.
  • Surgent CPE, at 2,300+ live webinars per year totaling 8,500+ credits, scheduled across time zones including evenings and weekends. The nearest published figure among comparable providers is roughly 1,000 webcasts annually.
  • It depends on volume. Individual courses commonly run $30 to $50 per credit, so a 40-hour annual requirement bought course by course lands between $1,200 and $2,000. Against that, an unlimited subscription pays back well before the requirement is met. For a licensee needing fewer than roughly 10 credits, course-by-course or credit packages generally cost less.
  • No, and coverage varies within a single provider by tier. Several state boards accept ethics credit only from providers approved by that board directly, separate from NASBA registration. Confirming ethics coverage for the specific jurisdiction before subscribing is the step that resolves it.
  • Free sessions from sponsor-supported platforms carry NASBA-registered credit and count where the state board accepts them. Assembling a full 40-hour requirement that way is a scheduling exercise, since availability follows sponsor interest rather than a planned curriculum, and state ethics requirements frequently fall outside free catalogs.
  • A subscription grants unlimited access to a catalog for a fixed term. A credit package sells a defined block of credits redeemable against courses over the year. Subscriptions favor unpredictable or high-volume consumption; credit packages favor a known fixed requirement.
