Lontier V. Hicks created the close-knit Noir CPA Web site in order to help other CPA Exam students achieve their goals and obtain success within the accounting industry. We sat down with Lontier to find out what inspires the Chicago native, entrepreneur, and CPA in today’s accounting world.

CPAexcel:  Lontier, what is it about CPA that grabbed your attention and gave you enough interest to want to pursue this as a career?

Lontier V. Hicks:  My step-mother has a background in accounting so that’s how the field first landed on my radar. I liked working with numbers and it seemed like it could be a rewarding career, so I took a chance with it and declared accounting as my major when applying for college.

Luckily enough, after my first accounting course my sophomore year I was instantly hooked. Everything clicked and I enjoyed the challenge. I decided to take advantage of a 5 year dual-degree program to obtain the 150 credit hours to sit for the CPA exam. I knew obtaining the credential would be essential to my credibility and success as an accountant.

CPAexcel:  What is your best piece of advice for students preparing to take the CPA exam?

Lontier V. Hicks:  Get a manageable game plan in order and execute. Also, don’t try and take on too much at once. Resist the temptation to be the overachiever you probably were in college. Apply for and then pass the exam, section by section. I had the bright idea of applying for all 4 sections at once thinking I was going to knock them out within the required 6 months. Long story short, I flushed a lot of money down the drain because of that idea.

CPAexcel:  What is the most important lesson that being a CPA has taught you?

Lontier V. Hicks:  It’s probably cliché, but seriously…after passing the exam I reaffirmed my belief that I can absolutely achieve anything I put my mind to. At the beginning of my studies it seemed like I was a novice at the foot of a mountain with all this climbing gear and I needed to figure out how to get to the top. Taking the first steps are so unfamiliar and feel daunting even, but once you begin to get your footing you gain confidence and the climb becomes a little easier. Don’t let fear prevent you from taking those first steps. You’ll look back in amazement at what you were able to achieve and apply that faith in yourself to future endeavors.

CPAexcel:  Any exciting events happening on your Web site now or in the near future?

Lontier V. Hicks:  CPA candidates should look out for an awesome Thanksgiving giveaway next month as a way to show our gratitude for our readers.

CPAexcel:  If you were granted one super power, what would it be and why?

Lontier V. Hicks:  The ability to create multiple versions of myself. I have so many ideas floating in my head on a daily basis concerning Noir CPA and other goals, which I wish I could accomplish right away. Of course there’s not enough time in a day to get it all done. It would be incredible if I could have some extras hands to help me out!

CPAexcel:  What do you do in your free time to relax and get away from it all?

Lontier V. Hicks:  I love to dance so for me it’s a great stress reliever and an opportunity for my mind to escape. Other times, I may snuggle up with my cat Nala and binge watch something on Netflix.
